**The product.** An AI study app. A student uploads class materials, such as PDFs, lecture slides, notes, images or YouTube videos, and gets answers with citations to those files, practice questions, flashcards, study guides, audio summaries and a topic-by-topic progress view. It runs on the web and, since May 2026, as an iOS app.

**Why it worked.** It starts from the student's own course files instead of general knowledge, so answers and practice questions point back to the material that the class uses. A free plan with monthly limits lets students try it, and Pro is sold by the week or by the month. Stripe shows about US$13,200 a month at the end of 2025; the seller says growth came with little to no marketing, and no source explains how students found it.

Evidence grades: A = disclosed by a public company, a filing or a payment processor, or verified by one; B = two or more independent reports agree, or a journalist confirmed it; C = a founder claim that no one else verified; D = reported, not verified: one founder claim or a third-party estimate with no second source; calc = computed on this page from graded facts.

## Summary

ChatEDU is an AI study app from ChatEDU, Inc., a US company. A student creates a course and uploads class materials: PDFs, lecture slides, documents, images, pasted text or YouTube videos. The app then answers questions with citations, references to the place in the student's own files that supports each answer, and turns the same files into practice questions, flashcards, study guides and audio summaries that it calls podcasts. A progress view marks each topic as mastered, in progress or not started. The free plan allows 30 AI chats, 30 practice questions and 2 podcasts per calendar month, and 3 uploads; Pro costs US$20 a month or US$10 a week. No downloaded source says which AI models it uses.

The money figures come from TrustMRR, a site that reads a startup's revenue directly from its payment processor, here Stripe, through an API key, a password that lets one program read data from another. On 14 October 2026 it showed US$174,644 in total revenue, US$120,117 in the last 12 months, and MRR (monthly recurring revenue, the subscription income expected each month) of US$7,040 from 362 active subscriptions. The public monthly history starts in November 2025. Its best month is December 2025 with US$13,243; September 2026 brought US$6,698, which is 49.4% less. In January 2026 the same page showed MRR of US$11,765 from 641 subscriptions. The founder named on the profile is Vasco Singh; no source names anyone else.

The founder listed the business for sale on TrustMRR on 8 December 2025, in the best month of its public history. The asking price was US$390,000 in January 2026 and is US$220,000 in October 2026. Since July 2025, free general chatbots offer study features of their own, such as ChatGPT's study mode. The revenue numbers on this page are grade A because they come from Stripe through TrustMRR; the product details, the team and the sale terms are statements by the company or the seller, grade C. The page also shows earlier companies that tried to sell students a better way to study.

## Why did ChatEDU work?

### Start from the student's files

Every tool works on what the student uploads: lecture slides, PDFs, notes, images, pasted text or YouTube videos. Answers carry citations to those files, and the About page tells students to check answers and citations against the original materials and the instructor's guidance. Nothing on the site offers finished homework or text to hand in; the tools produce explanations and practice.

### One upload, several study formats

The same file becomes a chat, practice questions, flashcards, a study guide and an audio summary. The student uploads once and studies the material in several forms. Since September 2026 a progress view marks each topic as mastered, in progress or not started.

### Short billing periods

Pro is sold for US$10 a week or US$20 a month, with no yearly plan on the pricing page, so a student can pay for a few weeks and stop. Revenue per active subscription is about US$19.45 a month, close to the monthly price.

### A free plan with monthly limits

The free plan allows 30 AI chats, 30 practice questions and 2 podcasts per calendar month, and 3 uploads. The pricing page presents Pro as the step after these limits: unlimited practice questions, chats and uploads.

## How it was built

These details come from the company's own pages, the page source of its site and the App Store record. They are grade C, except what the page source shows directly.

- The web app is built with Next.js, a framework for React web sites; its images load through Next.js image addresses.
- The page source opens connections to Vercel's analytics scripts and to PostHog, a product analytics service that records how visitors use a site, and its file addresses carry Vercel deployment IDs.
- Payments run through Stripe. TrustMRR reads the revenue from Stripe through an API key, and the privacy notice names Stripe as the payment provider.
- No downloaded source names the AI models or the model provider.
- The site is offered in 15 languages, among them Spanish, Hindi, Japanese and Chinese.
- An iOS app, ChatEDU: Study Tool & AI Notes, has been on the App Store since 1 May 2026, released by ChatEDU Inc.
- Students can bring PDFs, slides, documents, images, pasted text and YouTube videos; the free plan counts all of them against 3 uploads.

## Who tried this before ChatEDU, and why did they fail?

Five companies in the Loot Drop database tried to sell students a better way to study, and failed. The values below are from that database and are not independently verified.

The failed startups come from Loot Drop (https://www.loot-drop.io/), a free database of dead startups, retold here in our own words; Loot Drop describes its entries as AI-assisted summaries of public sources, so they carry no evidence grade.

### Flashnotes (2010 to 2016; funding US$1.47M; cause: Competition)

- Promise: A marketplace where college students sold their class notes and study guides to other students.
- Why it died: Course Hero and Chegg had better products and more money, and Flashnotes could not control the quality of the notes.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/154-flashnotes

### Grockit (2007 to 2015; funding US$44.4M; cause: Competition)

- Promise: Social, game-like test preparation for the SAT and the GMAT.
- Why it died: According to the database, Kaplan bought it in 2013 and the product faded inside the larger test-preparation company.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/196-grockit

### Knewton (2008 to 2020; funding US$182.3M; cause: Competition)

- Promise: Adaptive learning: software that changes each lesson to fit the student.
- Why it died: It spent its funding on complex AI that schools could not afford, while Khan Academy gave content away for free.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/281-knewton

### Kno (2009 to 2014; funding US$73M; cause: Competition)

- Promise: Interactive digital textbooks for students.
- Why it died: The large publishers made their own digital textbooks faster and cheaper than Kno expected.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/282-kno

### InstaGrok (2010 to 2013; funding US$500K; cause: Competition)

- Promise: A search tool for students that showed results as a map of connected ideas.
- Why it died: Schools did not change their methods, and free tools such as Quizlet and Khan Academy kept the students.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/1700-instagrok

## What changed

The five predecessors had to make or buy the study material: notes written by other students, digital textbooks, test-preparation courses, or adaptive lessons, for which Knewton raised US$182.3 million according to the database. ChatEDU has no content library. The student brings the material, and an AI model turns it into answers, questions, guides and audio. That is why a company with one named founder and no reported funding could reach about US$13,000 a month in Stripe revenue within a year of its founding date.

The same fact is the risk. What ChatEDU does with a student's files, the general AI assistants now do as well: ChatGPT added a study mode for all logged-in users, including the free plan, on 29 July 2025, and Google's NotebookLM has turned uploaded documents into audio discussions since September 2024. In the database, several predecessors lost to free products such as Khan Academy and Quizlet. ChatEDU's revenue fell by half in the nine months after December 2025, while these free tools were available to every student; the sources do not say whether they caused the fall.

## Can one person copy ChatEDU now?

**Verdict: The method, yes. The timing is harder now.**

A small team built a study app with no content of its own and reached about US$13,000 a month in Stripe revenue within a year. The method can be copied: the student supplies the material, an AI model does the work, and short billing periods fit the school calendar. The difficulty in 2026 is that free assistants from OpenAI and Google offer much of the same.

1. Build on the user's own material, so you need no content library and every answer can cite its source.
2. Turn one upload into several study formats: chat, practice questions, flashcards, guides and audio.
3. Offer a free plan with monthly limits and a short paid period, such as one week, for exam time.
4. Verify the revenue publicly, for example on TrustMRR, before you try to sell the business.

**What is still open.** Study tools for one exam or one profession, where the general assistants do not know the format: medical licensing exams, bar exams, professional certifications, and courses taught in languages other than English.

## What could go wrong for ChatEDU?

- **Revenue has halved since December 2025.** Stripe shows US$13,243 in December 2025 and US$6,698 in September 2026, a fall of 49.4%. From January to October 2026, MRR fell 40.2% and active subscriptions 43.5%. The seller message on the listing says "Growth is consistent with little to no marketing"; no source explains the fall. The last 30 days were 7.7% above the 30 days before.
- **Free chatbots with study modes.** OpenAI launched study mode in ChatGPT on 29 July 2025 for logged-in users on the Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans. Google's NotebookLM has made audio discussions of uploaded sources since 11 September 2024, the same idea as ChatEDU's podcasts. Both come from companies far larger than ChatEDU. The sources do not say how many ChatEDU users moved to them.
- **A school-year pattern without the September rise.** Revenue was highest at the end of the autumn term, in November and December 2025. It fell 16.0% in January, rose 10.4% in March, and averaged US$7,684 a month from June to August. A business that follows the school year should rise again in September, but September 2026 was flat against August (0.1% lower). Only one school year of monthly figures is public, so the pattern cannot be compared with an earlier year.
- **For sale, at a lower price.** Listed on TrustMRR since 8 December 2025. The asking price fell from US$390,000 in January 2026 to US$220,000 in October 2026, 43.6% less, with 11 offers received. The seller offers seller financing and 2 engineers for up to 3 months after the sale. In October 2026 the founder's X profile names a job at another company.
- **Claims on the home page.** The home page says "Join 200,000+ students" and shows the logos of ten universities, among them Harvard, MIT and Stanford, under "Trusted by top students". No source supports these claims, and three of the six student quotes on the page carry the label "Sample". Stripe shows 362 active subscriptions.
- **What the figures do not cover.** TrustMRR counts Stripe payments only. The iOS app has been on the App Store since May 2026, and the sources do not say whether it sells subscriptions through Apple, which would not appear here. The team size is not published; the only numbers are 1 named founder and 2 engineers offered for the handover.
