**The product.** A chat assistant for product managers. You describe a feature or paste notes, and it writes a product requirements document, reviews and scores an existing one, coaches you on the plan, and sends the result to tools such as Linear, Google Drive or Slack. Teams share projects, templates and documents in one workspace, and the paid plans use premium models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

**Why it worked.** The founder was the chief product officer of a software company and knew the job that she automated. She first released her prompt as a free custom GPT in OpenAI's store, where it became the most popular product management GPT, and then charged from the first day of her own web app. She posted the work in public on X to an audience of product people.

Evidence grades: A = disclosed by a public company, a filing or a payment processor, or verified by one; B = two or more independent reports agree, or a journalist confirmed it; C = a founder claim that no one else verified; D = reported, not verified: one founder claim or a third-party estimate with no second source; calc = computed on this page from graded facts.

## Summary

ChatPRD writes a PRD, a product requirements document: the text in which a product manager describes what a feature must do, for whom, and how success will be measured, so that engineers and designers can build it. The product is a chat assistant on top of large language models from OpenAI and Anthropic, with templates, a score for each document, saved project knowledge and integrations with the tools where software teams work. In October 2026 its home page says it is used by more than 250,000 product managers.

Claire Vo, then chief product officer of the software company LaunchDarkly, built it for herself in 2023. She wrote a long prompt for ChatGPT that produced a multi-page PRD in a few hours, published it as a free custom GPT, and then built a web app during Thanksgiving week. She launched chatprd.ai on X on 27 November 2023 with a Stripe subscription at US$1 a month and wrote that more than 100 users paid in the first week. On 20 June 2024 the newsletter Every, after Dan Shipper interviewed her for its podcast AI & I, said that the product was "Bringing in Six Figures" as a side project. In her own one-year review of 27 November 2024 she wrote "Six figures in revenue in the first 6 months" and "Six figures and growing in ARR", with thousands of paying users.

"Six figures" means at least US$100,000 and less than US$1 million, so this page uses US$100,000 as the headline value: the lowest amount that both statements allow. Both come from the founder or her interviewer, and no payment processor has confirmed them, so the grade is C. The page also shows four earlier companies that built an assistant for one kind of office work and lost to larger platforms.

## Pricing

ChatPRD prices in October 2026 from the company's pricing page (grade C), with two earlier prices for comparison

| Plan | Per month, billed yearly (US$) | Per month, billed monthly (US$) | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | 0 | 3 chats of limited length, basic model |
| Pro | 15 | | unlimited chats and documents, premium models |
| Teams | 29 per seat | | shared workspace, real-time editing, enterprise search |
| Enterprise | custom | | single sign-on, admin controls, onboarding |
| First plan, November 2023 | | 1 | founder's blog; historical |
| Premium, July 2024 | | from 5 | eBiz Facts; historical |

The pricing page shows yearly prices: Pro at US$15 a month, billed as US$179 a year, and Teams at US$29 per seat a month, billed as US$349 per seat a year. It says yearly billing saves up to 25% against monthly billing; the monthly prices are drawn by script and could not be read. Pro and Teams have a 14-day trial with a card. Enterprise adds single sign-on and onboarding at a price agreed with sales. The first price in November 2023 was US$1 a month, and in July 2024 eBiz Facts wrote that premium plans started at US$5 a month.

## How much revenue does ChatPRD make? The numbers, graded

At least US$100,000 in revenue in the first six months, as the founder and her interviewer reported in 2024, from a US$1 subscription and a free custom GPT

| Fact | Value | Grade | Note | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue in the first six months, to about May 2024 | six figures, at least US$100,000 | C | The founder's one-year review: "Six figures in revenue in the first 6 months". | [1] |
| Revenue reported in June 2024 | six figures | C | Every's podcast page of 20 June 2024: "She Built an AI Product Manager Bringing in Six Figures—As A Side Hustle". eBiz Facts quotes Dan Shipper's post: "now used by over 10,000 product managers and is pulling in six figures in revenue". | [2, 3] |

| Growth rate, November 2024 | 20% to 30% a month | C | The founder: "20-30% growth MoM every month, organically". | [1] |
| eBiz Facts' guess of monthly revenue, July 2024 | more than US$10,000 | D | The site's own estimate from the words "six figures", not a figure that the founder gave. | [3] |
| Paying users in the first week | more than 100 | C | The founder's one-year review, at US$1 a month through Stripe. | [1] |
| Paying users, November 2024 | thousands | C | The founder's one-year review. Over 25,000 sign-ups on the app and 500 teams on the Teams plan, which launched in August 2024. | [1] |
| Users | 10,000 in June 2024, 50,000 in May 2025, more than 250,000 in October 2026 | C | The founder's interview as quoted by eBiz Facts, her product update of 31 May 2025, and the home page. | [3, 7, 6] |
| Custom GPT in OpenAI's store, November 2024 | more than 200,000 chats, 4.5-star rating | C | The founder calls it the most popular product management GPT. It is free; the GPT store did not let builders charge. | [1] |
| Work output in the first year | more than 2,000 code commits; 2 to 5 features a week | C | The founder's one-year review: the commits were "mostly by me". | [1] |
| Team | 1 person for the first 6 months; two developers from July 2024; 2 people on the team page in October 2026 | C | One-year review: "For the first 6 months, the team was me." By November 2024 she names helpers for growth, engineering, sales and search marketing. The October 2026 team page lists the founder and chief executive and a head of growth. | [1, 4] |
| Outside funding | none reported | C | No source read for this page mentions a funding round or says that the company is bootstrapped. The company is ChatPRD, Inc. | [4, 6] |
| Other offers on the company's site, October 2026 | executive AI coaching, an AI consulting practice and a paid course | C | The services page links to CXO.dev, which it calls "Claire Vo and Zach Davis's AI consulting practice", and to a two-day course on Maven. | [8] |
| Time from launch to the headline figure | 7 months | calc | Calculated: 27 November 2023 to June 2024. In the interview she gave the launch day as "November 28th". | [1, 3] |

How to read this table: a grade C value is a statement by the founder in her own blog or interview, or a count read on the company's own pages. The one grade D value is an estimate by a third-party website. A "calc" value was computed on this page. No value is grade A or B.

## When did ChatPRD launch, and how did it grow? Timeline

From a prompt written between meetings to a product with a quarter of a million users, in under three years. Each entry carries its grade.

- **2023** (grade C [1]): As chief product officer at LaunchDarkly, she writes a PRD for a technical project with a long ChatGPT prompt in a few hours. Her team asks how she did it.
- **November 2023** (grade C [1, 3]): She puts the prompt into a custom GPT called ChatPRD, shares it with her team, and builds a web app in VS Code during Thanksgiving week.
- **27 November 2023** (grade C [1]): Launch of chatprd.ai on X with a Stripe subscription at US$1 a month. More than 100 paying users in the first week.
- **May 2024** (grade C [1]): End of the first six months, in which she later wrote that the product made six figures in revenue with her as the only person.
- **20 June 2024** (grade C [2, 3]): Every publishes Dan Shipper's interview: six figures as a side project, 10,000 users.
- **July 2024** (grade C [1, 3]): Two developers join; eBiz Facts reports premium plans from US$5 a month.
- **August 2024** (grade C [1]): Teams plan; 500 teams sign up by November.
- **27 November 2024** (grade C [1]): One-year review: thousands of paying users, six figures and growing in ARR, 20% to 30% growth a month.
- **31 May 2025** (grade C [7]): 50,000 users and more than 500,000 chats.
- **October 2026** (grade C [6, 4, 8]): More than 250,000 product managers. She runs ChatPRD full time, hosts the How I AI podcast, and the site also sells coaching and consulting.

## Why did ChatPRD work?

### An expert automating her own job

She had been chief product officer three times and wrote PRDs herself. The prompt that became ChatPRD encoded what she knew about a good requirements document, so the first users were people with the same job and the same deadline.

### A free GPT as the shop window

OpenAI's GPT store let anyone publish a custom GPT but not charge for it. She used the free GPT for reach, and it became the most popular product management GPT with more than 200,000 chats by November 2024, by her count. The paid product was her own web app.

### Charge on the first day, then raise the price

She wrote that she started at US$1 a month to test whether people would pay, got more than 100 paying users in the first week, and raised the price as features arrived: eBiz Facts reported US$5 a month in July 2024, and the pricing page lists US$15 a month billed yearly in October 2026.

### Building in public

She launched on X and, according to eBiz Facts, said that building in public on X, where she had about 21,000 followers, had been key. Later the company added a YouTube channel, a weekly newsletter and a Slack community.

## How it was built

These details come from the founder's blog, her interview and her own website. They are grade C.

- The first version was a long prompt in ChatGPT, then a custom GPT in OpenAI's store.
- The web app was written in VS Code during Thanksgiving week 2023; she says ChatGPT helped her build it faster.
- Payments through Stripe from the first day.
- More than 2,000 code commits in the first year, mostly by the founder, with two to five features shipped every week.
- The paid plans offer premium models from OpenAI and Anthropic; the pricing page says the company uses model APIs that do not train on customer data.
- In 2026 she writes on her own site that she uses OpenAI's Codex for ChatPRD work such as its continuous-integration tests.

## Who tried this before ChatPRD, and why did they fail?

Four companies in the Loot Drop database built a software assistant for one kind of office work and failed. The values below are from that database and are not independently verified.

The failed startups come from Loot Drop (https://www.loot-drop.io/), a free database of dead startups, retold here in our own words; Loot Drop describes its entries as AI-assisted summaries of public sources, so they carry no evidence grade.

### Kite DevTool (2014 to 2024; funding US$21M; cause: Competition)

- Promise: AI code completion for programmers inside their editor, years before GitHub Copilot.
- Why it died: It could not get users to pay for the freemium product, and GitHub Copilot, built on OpenAI's models, had the distribution and the better model.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/2491-kite-devtool

### Niles (2017 to 2020; funding US$2.8M; cause: Competition)

- Promise: A Slack bot that answered questions from a company's collected knowledge.
- Why it died: Slack's own features and cheaper competitors did the same job.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/1031-niles

### Interstate (2011 to 2014; funding US$120K; cause: Competition)

- Promise: Visual roadmaps that teams could share to plan and track projects.
- Why it died: Trello and Asana, with more money, offered planning that teams already used.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/1612-interstate

### Answerly (2013 to 2016; funding US$550K; cause: Product/Tech Failure)

- Promise: FAQ chatbots that answered customer questions so that support staff saw only the hard ones.
- Why it died: Language processing was too weak at the time, and Zendesk and Intercom owned the market.
- Record: https://www.loot-drop.io/startup/2168-answerly

## What changed

Each of the four sold an assistant for one task and lost to a platform that added the task to a product people already used: GitHub with Copilot, Slack with its own search, Trello and Asana with planning. ChatPRD faces the same risk from ChatGPT, Claude and the document tools that add writing help, and the founder started on exactly that platform, as a free GPT.

Two things differ. The language models that Kite and Answerly lacked are now sold by API, so a single expert could build the assistant in a week without training a model. And the product is narrow on purpose: the templates, scoring and project knowledge carry one profession's methods, written by someone who did the job, and the integrations put the document where the team works. Whether that is enough against general assistants is open; the founder herself writes that she expects product management to change.

## Can one person copy ChatPRD now?

**Verdict: Yes, if you are the expert.**

The method is open to anyone who does a document-heavy job well: write the prompt that does your own work, give it away where people already look for AI tools, and charge for a web app with the features a team needs. The part that is hard to copy is the founder's position: three times a chief product officer, with an audience of product people on X.

1. Automate one document that you write often and that others in your profession also write.
2. Publish a free version inside a store where people already search for AI tools.
3. Launch a paid web app at a very low price on day one to test willingness to pay, then raise it with each feature.
4. Add the team plan early: shared templates, projects and integrations are what companies pay for.

**What is still open.** Other jobs built around one standard document: grant proposals, clinical trial protocols, audit reports, legal briefs, engineering design reviews.

## What could go wrong for ChatPRD?

- **Self-reported, and a wide range.** "Six figures" covers anything from US$100,000 to US$999,999. The two statements come from the founder's blog and from an interviewer who repeated what she told him; no payment processor, filing or buyer has confirmed them, and no exact figure has been published since November 2024.
- **No newer revenue figure.** The user count grew from 10,000 in June 2024 to more than 250,000 in October 2026, but the sources give no revenue after November 2024, so the trend of revenue is unknown.
- **Funding was not checked in a register.** No source read for this page states a funding round, and none says the company is bootstrapped. The founder writes on her own site that she invests "in AI, dev tools, and hard things".
- **Coaching and consulting on the same site.** In October 2026 the services page sells executive AI coaching, a course on Maven and AI transformation work through CXO.dev, "Claire Vo and Zach Davis's AI consulting practice". The software is the product in this story; revenue from these services is not part of any figure on this page.
- **The platform can do it too.** ChatPRD runs on OpenAI and Anthropic models and began as a GPT in OpenAI's store. The model makers' own assistants can write a PRD from a prompt, so the product depends on doing it better than a general assistant.
