Interior AI
Interior AI is an image-to-image design tool. Image-to-image means that an image model takes an existing picture as input, here a photo of your room, and a text instruction, and produces a new picture that keeps the shape of the input but changes its content. Interior AI uses this to redesign a room in a chosen style, to furnish an empty room, which real estate agents call virtual staging (adding furniture to a photo of an empty home so that the listing looks lived in), and to turn a line sketch into a realistic render.
Pieter Levels, a Dutch programmer who has run one-person internet businesses since 2014, built it alone in five days in September 2022, a few weeks after Stability AI released the Stable Diffusion model as open source. He has said it made US$10,000 to US$20,000 a month within a week. The site showed its own monthly recurring revenue on the home page: US$6,446 in November 2022, US$49,000 in September 2023, US$32,000 in September 2024. In September 2024 he listed it at US$43,000 a month on a record day after his Lex Fridman interview. He then launched Photo AI, which is on this site separately, from the same code and fine-tuning method.
Every number on this page is a founder statement, grade C: his posts, his interview answers and the revenue counter that he placed on the site. No payment processor or buyer has confirmed them. His own project page shows Interior AI's share of his income falling from 13% in 2023 to 3% in 2026, and he wrote in July 2026 that large AI products are taking over what used to be small apps. The page also shows what happened to earlier interior design startups, which used human designers behind a software front.

How to read this table: every value is a founder statement, grade C, from his posts, his interviews or the revenue counter he displayed on the site, unless marked "calc", which means computed on this page from the rows above it. No value is grade A or B.
| Plan | Per month, billed yearly (US$) | Per month, billed monthly (US$) | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | 29 | 49 | 1,000 designs a month, low quality, 4 rooms in parallel |
| Premium | 49 | 99 | 5,000 designs a month, medium quality, editing, virtual staging, videos |
| Ultra | 99 | 199 | 25,000 designs a month, highest quality, 16 rooms in parallel, dedicated server |
All plans are subscriptions. The yearly price is shown per month and is billed once a year: Pro US$349, Premium US$599, Ultra US$1,199. The limit is the number of interior designs per month. From September 2024 to at least October 2025 the monthly prices were US$39, US$99 and US$299, and the yearly prices US$199, US$499 and US$1,699, according to archived copies of the page. The site says refunds are not given because the GPU time has already been paid for.
The timeline
From an open-source image model to a paid product in two weeks, then two years near US$40,000 a month, then decline. Each entry carries its grade.
- August 2022CStability AI releases Stable Diffusion as open source. Levels installs it on his laptop and generates houses. His post of 18 September says this was two weeks earlier. [14]
- 5 September 2022CHe launches This House Does Not Exist, a site that generates modern houses. He later says that people got bored of it, but that the model was good at interiors. [14, 2]
- September 2022CHe builds Interior AI in five days. The first archived copy, 15 September 2022, is a gallery of generated interiors. By 2 October the site accepts a photo of your room and shows 19,129 interiors rendered; payment is "not working yet, building it now". [7, 8]
- 4 October 2022CThe launch thread on X: "Here's how I built interiorai.com from scratch in 5 days". He says it made US$10,000 to US$20,000 a month within a week. [7, 2]
- 1 November 2022CThe home page shows US$6,446 in monthly recurring revenue. A Pro plan removes watermarks and unlocks more rooms, styles and resolutions. [3]
- November 2022CHe fine-tunes the model on a gallery of good interiors, then on photos of himself. That experiment becomes Avatar AI and then Photo AI, which is on this site separately. [2]
- 4 September 2023CThe home page shows US$49,000 in monthly recurring revenue, the highest archived value. The site now calls itself "the first AI Interior Designer in the world". [4]
- October 2023CIn a podcast he says that interior designers use the tool to show clients ideas, and that he wants to bring Photo AI and Interior AI to US$100,000 a month each. [15]
- 4 December 2023CInterior AI v2 turns minimal architect sketches into renders. [16]
- 14 January 2024CUS$38,000 in monthly recurring revenue on the home page. An affiliate program pays 20% of referred payments. [6]
- 27 March 2024CSomeone at Wayfair asks him to cancel their subscription. The company had run 8 accounts for months while building its own AI interior design tool, which launched in 2023. [9]

- 22 September 2024CA record day after the podcast: US$43,000 a month for Interior AI inside US$420,000 a month in total, at about 80% profit. GPUs for Photo AI and Interior AI cost about US$60,000 a month. [1]
- 13 January 2026CRoom detection, the step that recognises what kind of room is in the photo, is moved to xAI's language model. [17]
- 24 February 2026CHe adds a viewer for Gaussian splats, a 3D representation built from images, so that a customer can walk through the generated interior, using the World Labs API. [18]
- 6 April 2026CAn automatic system answers Stripe payment disputes with a PDF of the designs the customer generated. [19]
- 26 July 2026CHe writes that large AI products are "cannibalizing everything that used to be apps for indiehackers", with declining revenue and traffic on his own projects too. [20]
- 23 September 2026CHis total business revenue is US$200,000 to US$250,000 a month and stable. His project page gives Interior AI 3% of his 2026 revenue and investment gains. [11, 10]
Why it worked
Four causes, in the order they mattered. Each one is a reusable lesson.
Two weeks after the model, first in the category
Stable Diffusion became open source in late August 2022. Levels launched a house generator on 5 September and Interior AI in September. He has said that he launched it because "obviously interior design AI, and nobody's doing that yet". The first version was a free site with a counter of rendered interiors; the paid plan came weeks later.
Image-to-image on a photo of your own room
Generating random interiors was a toy. The product became useful when a customer could upload a photo of a real room and get the same room back in a different style. The site then added the uses that people pay for: virtual staging of empty homes for real estate listings, sketches to renders for architects, and an editor to brush away mistakes.
An audience built over ten years
Levels had published his revenue in public since 2014 and had hundreds of thousands of followers on X when he posted the launch thread. He has said that going on national television brings him about 3 sign-ups, while the Lex Fridman podcast raised his revenue 2.5 times. There was no paid marketing.
Rented GPUs and one person
The model runs on rented GPUs through inference providers; the site says refunds are not possible because the GPU time has already been paid. There are no employees. In September 2024 the founder reported about 80% profit across his products.
How it was built
These details come from the founder's posts, his interviews and archived copies of the site. They are grade C. [14, 2, 11, 1, 17, 18, 19, 6, 5]
- Stable Diffusion, open-sourced in August 2022, with image-to-image: the photo of the room is the input, the style is the text prompt. Later a model fine-tuned on a gallery of good interior photos, and now the Flux model according to the pricing page.
- Built in five days, alone. The founder says Photo AI is "the same code essentially". Photo AI is a single PHP file, as described on its own page on this site.
- Inference on rented GPUs through providers such as Replicate and FAL, in which the founder later invested. GPU cost was about US$60,000 a month for Photo AI and Interior AI together in September 2024.
- A language model detects the room type in the uploaded photo; moved to xAI's model in January 2026.
- Gaussian splats from the World Labs API let a customer walk through the generated room in 3D, with a viewer the founder wrote himself in February 2026.
- Payments through Stripe. A home page counter showed monthly recurring revenue from 2022 to 2024. In 2026 an automatic system answers payment disputes with evidence of the customer's usage.
- Marketing is the founder's posts on X and podcast interviews. An affiliate program pays 20% to 30% of referred payments.

The dead that came before
Five companies in the Loot Drop database sold interior design or home design through software. The values below are from that database and are not independently verified.
Modsy
The promiseUpload photos of your room and get photorealistic 3D renders with furniture you can buy.
Why it diedThe renders were made by human designers, 2 to 4 hours per room, sold for US$69 to US$199. Margins were thin and paid social ads cost more than customers returned.
Laurel & Wolf
The promiseOnline interior design: a flat fee connects you with a professional designer.
Why it diedFlat fees did not cover customer acquisition. Scaling the designer network lowered quality and the brand.
Tastemaker
The promiseAffordable professional interior design for middle-income households, through a web platform.
Why it diedA distributed workforce of designers gave inconsistent results. Better-funded competitors arrived and the company could not pay to acquire enough users.
Kujiale
The promiseDesign your own home in 3D in the browser and see the furniture in place.
Why it diedChinese consumers did not want to design their own homes. Users played with the tool and left, and AI tools made the technology ordinary.
Iwjw (Love Home)
The promiseA marketplace that standardises home renovation and interior design in China.
Why it diedAcquiring a homeowner cost US$300 to US$500 and few came back for a second job. Contractors left the platform after one project.
What changed
Each of the five sold design as a service and had a human cost behind every job: a designer who spent hours per room, a contractor, a customer acquired through paid ads. The software was a front for labour, so the price could not go below the labour, and the margin never appeared.
Interior AI has no labour per render. A design costs GPU time measured in cents and arrives in 25 seconds, so the product can be sold as a subscription with thousands of renders a month and a profit margin near 80%. The customer gets ideas, not a finished room, and the ones who pay are the ones who need many images fast: real estate agents staging listings and designers showing options to clients. What the predecessors show is the trap to avoid: as soon as a human must touch each output, the economics of the five return.
Can one person copy it now?
The launch, no. The method, yes, in another domain.
Being the first interior tool on Stable Diffusion was an opening of a few weeks in September 2022, and the founder himself now writes that large AI products take over small apps. The method is still available: take a new open model, find one input that people already have, here a photo of a room, and ship the obvious product in days, with a subscription priced above the GPU cost.
Where it is still open: Any new open model with a one-image or one-file input: floor plans, garden photos, product photos, architectural sketches, and the walk-through videos and 3D views that image models now produce.
- 1When a model is released as open source, build the one-input product within a week and put a counter of outputs on the page.
- 2Make the paid version the one that works on the customer's own data, here their room, not random generations.
- 3Find the customer who needs volume, such as agents staging listings, and price the plans by renders per month.
- 4Keep costs to rented GPUs and one person, and expect the revenue to fall when the model providers ship the same feature.
What to watch
The risks are the mirror image of the causes above.
Self-reported, and a record day
The headline figure, US$43,000 a month, comes from a founder post about a record day after a podcast, and he wrote that revenue dropped a lot right after. The site's own counter showed US$32,000 three weeks earlier.
Decline since 2025
The founder's project page shows Interior AI's share of his income falling from 13% in 2023 to 6% in 2025 and 3% in 2026, and in July 2026 he wrote that his projects have declining revenue and traffic. The exact revenue after September 2024 is not published.
The feature belongs to everyone now
Wayfair built its own tool after studying this one, and every image model provider now does image-to-image editing from a chat window. The founder's answer is to add what the model providers do not sell: staging, sketches, videos and 3D walk-throughs.
Sales depend on one person's audience
There is no paid marketing. Revenue rose 2.5 times after one podcast and fell afterwards. The business is tied to the founder's posts.
No refunds and dispute volume
The site refuses refunds because the GPU time is already spent, and the founder built an automatic system to fight card disputes, which suggests that disputes are frequent enough to matter.
