What is not verified

The only dated revenue figure, just under US$1,000 a month in recurring revenue with US$300 a month in running costs, rests on one statement by the founder Herman Schutte in an interview that Indie Hustle published on 30 August 2023. No payment processor, tax record or buyer has confirmed it, and no later figure from the founder was found. Latka's estimate of US$9,900 a year (October 2024) sits on a page that says the company has not published its revenue. A reader could look for a payment-processor-verified revenue profile (none was found on TrustMRR) or a newer founder interview. The headline number is grade D: one claim or one estimate, with no second source. Aiolum shows it because the story is useful, and marks it so that it is not mistaken for a verified figure.

SiteSpeakAI is a retrieval-augmented chatbot: a chatbot that first looks up the passages of a company's own content that match a question and then lets a large language model write the answer from those passages, so the answer is about this company and not general knowledge. The customer adds a small widget, a piece of script that shows a chat window on every page of a website. The pricing page that was read on 1 November 2026 lists a free plan and paid plans from US$29 a month, priced by message credits, where one credit is one AI reply to a visitor.

Herman Schutte, a web developer from South Africa, built it alone next to his older products SnapWidget, Snapto and Stackpile. It launched on Product Hunt on 22 June 2023. In an interview that the newsletter Indie Hustle published on 30 August 2023, he said that SiteSpeakAI "makes just under $1k MRR at the moment, and the cost for running is $300". That is about two months after the launch.

This is the only dated revenue figure that was found, and it is one founder statement, grade D. Latka estimated US$9,900 a year for October 2024, but the same page says the company has not published its revenue, so that estimate is not used as evidence. The product is still developed in 2026: its changelog has an entry dated 23 October 2026.

How to read this table: grade D is a single statement that no one else has checked (here, one founder interview or one third-party estimate). Grade C is the company's own current page or a public record such as a Product Hunt launch page. A "calc" value (grade X) was computed on this page from the rows above it. No value is grade A or B.

Yearly billing costs the same as 10 months. Every paid plan has a 7-day free trial; the page says payments are not refunded. Extra message credits cost US$25 per 1,000. The Pro, Growth and Business plans can use models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others, and can use the customer's own API keys. In August 2023 the founder said there were three plans at US$30, US$60 and US$500 a month and no free plan, because of the OpenAI costs.

03

Why did SiteSpeakAI work?

Four causes, in the order they mattered. Each one is a reusable lesson.

01

Customers from the founder's other products

The founder said in August 2023 that SiteSpeakAI's first customers came from a Product Hunt launch and from promotion to the customers of SnapWidget, his older and most profitable app. A founder who already has paying customers of another web tool starts with people who trust him.

02

A link in every chat window

Free and lower plans show "Powered by SiteSpeakAI" at the bottom of the chat. The founder said in 2023 that this link brings in some leads; on the 2026 pricing page, removing it is a feature of the paid Starter plan.

03

Search pages and free tools

In 2023 the founder named search engine optimization as his main channel. The 2026 site has comparison pages against eleven competitors and free tools such as an llms.txt generator and a website rating tool, pages that people find through search.

04

Pricing by message credits

Each AI reply costs the business a model call. Pricing by message credits ties the price to that cost, and the higher plans let customers bring their own API keys, so the model cost moves to them.

How it was built

Few build details are public. These come from the founder's 2023 interview and the company's own pages, grade C or D. [1, 4, 3]

  • The chatbot answers with models from OpenAI; the founder named "the OpenAI costs" as the reason for having no free plan in 2023.
  • In 2026 the home page says that AI providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google process the queries, and the higher plans can use the customer's own API keys.
  • It learns from web pages, help documents, PDF files and videos, and answers in more than 95 languages.
  • It connects to other tools through an API and an MCP server (Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI programs to call outside tools), and to WhatsApp, Slack, Telegram, Discord and HubSpot.
  • The page source loads PostHog for product analytics and Tolt for the affiliate program.
  • The founder works alone from a home office and also runs support for his other products.

Who tried this before SiteSpeakAI, and why did they fail?

Four companies in our database of failed startups sold website chat or automated customer-service answers before large language models existed, and failed. The values below are from that database and are not independently verified.

Died 2013 to 2016Burned US$550K

Answerly

The promise

Fewer support tickets through automatic answers embedded in company websites.

Why it died

Language processing could not yet handle real customer questions, so each customer needed months of manual setup.

Product/Tech Failure
Died 2012 to 2015Burned US$120K

Hipmob

The promise

Customer-support chat inside mobile apps and websites.

Why it died

Intercom and Zendesk added the same chat features, and Hipmob could not give customers a reason to switch.

Competition
Died 2014 to 2022Burned US$600K

RightHello

The promise

Live chat that turns online-shop visitors into buyers.

Why it died

Better-funded chat platforms grew into full customer-communication suites; it ran out of money.

Ran Out of Cash
Died 2019 to 2024Burned US$18M

Vanti

The promise

AI conversations that help online shops sell.

Why it died

Brands ran pilots but did not see enough extra sales to keep paying; customer acquisition was expensive.

No Market Need

The failed startups come from our database of 1,749 dead startups, retold here in our own words. Its entries are AI-assisted summaries of public sources, so these cards carry no evidence grade.

What changed

Answerly and Vanti promised automatic answers before the language technology could give them; each customer had to write answers and decision trees by hand. Since 2023, a large language model can read a company's pages and documents and answer from them, so the setup takes minutes, and one person can sell the product without a services team.

What did not change is the competition. Hipmob and RightHello lost to larger chat platforms, and SiteSpeakAI's own site lists eleven competitors it compares itself with. The founder said in 2023 that this market is "a lot more difficult because there are lots of competitors".

05

Can one person copy SiteSpeakAI now?

Yes, the method; the market is crowded.

The parts are available to any web developer: a model API, a document index and a chat widget. What this founder had in addition was the customer list of an older product and years of search-engine work. Without such a starting audience, the founder's own words about competition apply even more.

Where it is still open: Narrow versions for one industry, such as clinics, law firms or online shops, where the answers depend on the business's own rules and the large chat platforms are too general.

  1. 1Build the tool you want for your own products first, here a cheaper support chat.
  2. 2Launch it on Product Hunt and offer it to the customers of a product you already run.
  3. 3Put a "Powered by" link in the free widget, and charge for removing it.
  4. 4Price by AI replies so that model costs never exceed what the customer pays.

What could go wrong for SiteSpeakAI?

The risks are the mirror image of the causes above.

The figure is from 2023

The headline figure is from two months after launch. The product has added plans up to US$1,299 a month for agencies since then, but no source shows what it earns in 2026.

The customer count is a company claim

The home page says "Trusted by 1,000+ businesses across SaaS, e-commerce, and agencies". This was not checked, and the reviews on the page load by script and were not read.

A crowded market built on other companies' models

The founder said in 2023 that there are "lots of competitors"; the site compares itself with eleven, among them Intercom, Zendesk and Chatbase. The answers come from models of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, whose prices and terms the business does not control.
