AI2SQL
AI2SQL writes SQL, Structured Query Language, the standard language for reading and changing data in relational databases, from requests in plain English. This is called text-to-SQL: a language model reads the request and the type of database and returns the query. The 2022 home page gave this example request: "Show me dogs and cat names where breed is 'dachshund' and size is 'small'". The tool also explains a query, fixes syntax errors and suggests a faster version. On the Pro and Team plans it connects to the customer's own database, reads its schema, the list of tables and columns with their types, and runs read-only queries. It can do this from inside Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor through an MCP server, a service that follows the Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI assistants to call outside tools.
Mustafa Ergisi launched AI2SQL on Product Hunt on 25 October 2021. In February 2022 the site said it was "Powered by OpenAI Codex & GPT3", and its sign-up pages ran on Bubble, a no-code builder, a service for making web apps by arranging parts on screen instead of writing code. A third-party write-up says it had US$1,151 of MRR, monthly recurring revenue, the amount that all active subscriptions bring in each month, in February 2023 (not verified). According to the gaps.com newsletter, the founder reported US$5,000 MRR about a year before January 2025, and a screenshot of his revenue dashboard shows US$10,026.53 MRR on 19 January 2025. That is a run rate, the current month's revenue times 12, of about US$120,000 a year, 39 months after launch.
Every figure on this page comes from the founder, through a screenshot or a third party that repeats him, so it is grade C. No payment processor, buyer or journalist has confirmed it, and no figure newer than January 2025 was found. The same write-up also reports US$100,000 a year in December 2023, which does not fit the other figures, so this page does not use it. The page also shows earlier companies that promised an easier way to get answers from data, and what happened to them when larger platforms built the same feature.

The numbers, graded
Each row shows the evidence grade and the source numbers from the list at the end of this page. The grades are explained in How Aiolum verifies.
| Fact | Value | Grade | How we know | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly recurring revenue, 19 January 2025 | US$10,026.53 | C | A screenshot of a revenue dashboard ("MRR $10,026.53", "Updated Jan 19") in the gaps.com report for January 2025, published 6 February 2025. The newsletter wrote "If correct" and does not say that it checked the account. | [1] |
| Run rate from that figure | about US$120,000 a year | calc | Calculated: US$10,026.53 times 12 is US$120,318. | [1] |
| Monthly recurring revenue, early 2024 | US$5,000 | C | The founder's earlier statement as gaps.com reports it, "almost a year" before the January 2025 figure. The newsletter gives no exact date or link. | [1] |
| Growth during 2024 | about 2 times | calc | Calculated: US$10,026.53 divided by US$5,000 is 2.0. Gaps.com: he "effectively doubled his revenue in 2024". | [1] |
| Monthly recurring revenue, February 2023 | US$1,151 from 128 paying users | C | A third-party write-up of September 2025 that cites an Indie Hackers post by the founder, which this page could not open. Not verified. About US$9 per paying user a month (calculated). | [2] |
| "US$100,000 ARR", December 2023 | not used | C | Same write-up, which gives it as about US$8,500 a month. US$100,000 divided by 12 is US$8,333, two thirds more than the US$5,000 reported for early 2024, and the dashboard line shows no fall. The write-up does not say how it was counted. | [2, 1] |
| Users and queries, early 2025 | 50,000 users, 75,000 queries | C | The site's own numbers as gaps.com quotes them: 1.5 queries per user (calculated). The newsletter guessed that most people test one query and do not return. | [1] |
| Early use, February 2022 | 500+ sign-ups, 1,600+ queries generated | C | Counters on the home page in the Wayback Machine snapshot of 27 February 2022, four months after launch. | [4] |
| Product Hunt launches | 25 October 2021 and 14 March 2023 | C | Product Hunt's record. The first, "Write SQL queries with no knowledge of SQL", was fifth of the day and 26th of the week. AI2sql 2.0 was 20th of the day. The write-up's launch date of April 2022 does not match. | [3, 2] |
| AI models | OpenAI Codex and GPT-3 in 2022; not named today | C | The 2022 footer: "Powered by OpenAI Codex & GPT3". In October 2026 the pricing page names only a "Basic" and an "Advanced" model. The company also published a fine-tuned Mistral 7B model on Hugging Face. | [4, 5, 9] |
| Prices, October 2026 | US$9, US$19 and US$39 a month; US$29 one-time | C | Start, Pro and Team, or US$7, US$14 and US$29 a month billed yearly. The one-time Lifetime plan allows 500 queries a month. A free plan allows 3 queries a day on a demo database. | [5] |
| Affiliate commission | 30% of the first 3 subscription payments | C | From the affiliate program page. | [8] |
| Pages in the sitemap, October 2026 | 752 | calc | Calculated: counted on this page from the sitemap. They include SQL lessons, SQL templates, database comparisons and blog posts. | [6] |
| Team | 1 founder; no employees reported | C | Gaps.com and Product Hunt name only Mustafa Ergisi. The write-up calls him a solo founder and a former data analyst from Istanbul, Turkey: not verified. | [1, 3, 2] |
| Outside funding | none reported | C | No source reports a funding round. The write-up says "No external funding". | [2] |
| Operating company | Cross Regions Technology, Jacksonville, Florida | C | Named on the contact page in October 2026. The terms of service say only "operated by AI2sql" and choose United States law. | [8] |
| Time from launch to the January 2025 figure | 39 months | calc | Calculated: October 2021 to January 2025. | [3, 1] |
How to read this table: a grade C value is a founder statement, shown in a screenshot or repeated by a newsletter or a write-up, or a record on Product Hunt or on the company's own pages. A "calc" value was computed on this page from the rows above it. No value is grade A or B.
| Plan | Per month, billed yearly (US$) | Per month, billed monthly (US$) | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | 0 | 3 queries a day on a demo database |
| Start | 7 | 9 | 100 queries a month; MySQL and PostgreSQL |
| Pro | 14 | 19 | unlimited queries; advanced model; own database; MCP; desktop app |
| Team | 29 | 39 | 5 users; shared query library; role-based access |
| Lifetime | 29 one-time | 500 AI queries a month |
Every paid plan starts with a 7-day free trial that needs a card. Billed yearly, the plans cost US$84, US$168 and US$348 a year, which the page calls a 25% saving. Connecting your own database needs Pro or Team. The Lifetime plan is one payment with a monthly query limit.

Why it worked
Four causes, in the order they mattered. Each one is a reusable lesson.
One narrow job
AI2SQL does one thing: SQL. It writes a query from a request in plain English, explains a query, fixes syntax errors and suggests faster versions, in the variant of SQL that each database uses: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite, Snowflake, BigQuery and others. It went on Product Hunt in October 2021 with that single promise and still sells it five years later.
Bought parts for the first version
In February 2022 the site said that OpenAI's Codex and GPT-3 models produced the SQL, and the sign-up and pricing pages ran on Bubble, a no-code builder. The model came from OpenAI and the app pages from Bubble.
A page for every SQL question
The sitemap lists 752 pages: SQL lessons for functions in each database, SQL templates, database comparisons, pages such as "AI2sql vs. ChatGPT", and blog posts. Pages like these answer searches that people who write SQL type, and the pages read for this story carry a free sign-up offer. No source says what share of customers came from search.
Low prices, a trial and a lifetime plan
Plans cost US$9 to US$39 a month, or US$7 to US$29 a month billed yearly, and each starts with a 7-day trial that needs a card. A US$29 lifetime plan with 500 queries a month brings in cash once. Affiliates get 30% of the first 3 subscription payments of each customer they refer.
Inside the chatbots, not against them
The newest features put AI2SQL inside the general assistants. Its MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code write SQL through AI2SQL on every plan, and run read-only queries on a connected database on Pro and Team. The footer now calls the product "The data layer for AI agents".
How it was built
These details come from the company's pages, read in October 2026 and in a Wayback Machine snapshot of February 2022, including the code of those pages. They are grade C. [4, 6, 5, 9, 7, 8, 2]
- 2022: a landing page whose sign-up and pricing links went to ai2sql.bubbleapps.io, an app made with Bubble. The footer said "Powered by OpenAI Codex & GPT3". The page loaded Google Analytics and Hotjar to record visits.
- 2026: the marketing site is built with Astro, a framework that produces static pages, and the app runs at builder.ai2sql.io. The pages load Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Mixpanel and Microsoft Clarity to measure visits, a Google Ads tag, and Crisp for support chat.
- Models: the pricing page names only a "Basic" and an "Advanced" AI model and says that customer queries and schemas are "never sold or used to train models". A blog post describes AI2SQL Mistral-7B, the open Mistral 7B model fine-tuned for text-to-SQL on WikiSQL data with LoRA, a method that trains a small set of added weights instead of the whole model, and published on Hugging Face. The site does not say whether the paid plans use it.
- Today the product has a web app, a desktop app for Windows and Mac, an API, and an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code.
- Company: the contact page names Cross Regions Technology in Jacksonville, Florida. The terms of service, made with the PolicyMaker.io template generator, say only "operated by AI2sql" and choose United States law.
- A third-party write-up lists Bubble, Google Cloud, HubSpot, Stripe, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity as the tools, with monthly costs. Bubble, Google Analytics and Clarity are visible in the page code; the rest is not verified.
Tools named in the sources
Each one opens its page in the Tools tab, with every story that uses it.
The dead that came before
Four companies in the Loot Drop database promised an easier way to get answers from data or to run a database, and lost when larger platforms offered the same thing. The values below are from that database and are not independently verified.
Ask Jeeves
The promiseAsk a search engine a question in plain words, without learning keyword and Boolean syntax.
Why it diedIts answers depended on human editors and a fixed set of question-and-answer pairs, which could not grow with the web. Google's automatic ranking won.
SumAll
The promiseOne dashboard of marketing and sales data for small businesses, with no data specialist needed.
Why it diedIt could not stand apart from Tableau, Google Analytics and free tools. Small businesses did not see the value in its price, and many left.
Skysheet
The promiseA spreadsheet in the cloud with real-time collaboration and better charts.
Why it diedGoogle and Microsoft moved their own spreadsheets to the cloud and added collaboration.
FathomDB
The promiseManaged cloud databases with automatic scaling, backups and monitoring.
Why it diedAWS introduced RDS, and the large cloud providers offered the same service with far more money.
What changed
Each of the four sold an easier way to reach data or to run a database, and each lost when a larger company that owned the platform built the same feature into it. AI2SQL faces the same risk. The databases that it writes SQL for now write SQL themselves: in July 2023 Databricks wrote: "Describe your task in English and let the Assistant generate SQL queries, explain complex code, and automatically fix errors." That is close to AI2SQL's own list of features. Snowflake, Google and Microsoft document similar features.
Two things differ. First, AI2SQL is one person without outside funding, so it does not need a large share of the market: about US$10,000 a month can support one person. Second, it works across many databases and also inside Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, so a customer with data in several systems, or a person who already works in a chatbot, has a reason to use it instead of one vendor's assistant. Whether that reason lasts as each platform improves its own assistant is the open question.
Can one person copy it now?
The early start, no. The narrow tool with search pages, partly.
AI2SQL started in 2021 on OpenAI's Codex and GPT-3; today the database makers and the general chatbots write SQL too. What a new founder can still copy is the shape: one narrow job that people repeat every week, a reference page for every variant of that job, a low price with a trial, and a connection into the tools that people already use.
Where it is still open: Other formal languages that people write rarely but must get exactly right: spreadsheet formulas, regular expressions, DAX for Power BI, log search queries and infrastructure configuration files.
- 1Choose one task that people repeat every week and must get exactly right, such as SQL for a particular database.
- 2Build the first version on a model API and a no-code builder, as AI2SQL did with OpenAI's models and Bubble.
- 3Publish a page for every variant of the task: each function, database, error code and comparison.
- 4Add what a general chatbot lacks, the customer's own schema, a read-only connection and team features, and offer them inside the chatbots through MCP.
What to watch
The risks are the mirror image of the causes above.
Self-reported, from one screenshot
The headline figure is a screenshot of a revenue dashboard that the founder shared and a newsletter republished with the words "If correct". No payment processor, buyer or journalist has confirmed it. The latest figure is from January 2025, 21 months before this page was written, so whether revenue kept growing is not known.
The 2023 figures conflict
A third-party write-up gives US$100,000 ARR in December 2023, which is about US$8,333 a month. That is two thirds more than the US$5,000 a month reported for early 2024, and the dashboard line shows no fall in that period, so this page does not use it. The same write-up dates the launch to April 2022, but Product Hunt records the first launch on 25 October 2021.
The database makers built it in
Databricks put SQL generation, explanation and error fixing into its SQL editor in a public preview on 31 July 2023, and announced Genie, a conversational interface for business questions, on 12 June 2024. Snowflake documents Cortex Analyst, with which "business users can ask questions in natural language". Google's BigQuery documentation describes a SQL generation tool that "lets you use natural language to generate a SQL query", and Microsoft documents Copilot in Azure SQL Database on a page dated 8 April 2025. These come with platforms that the customers already pay for.
General chatbots write SQL
The company's own site has pages that compare AI2SQL with ChatGPT. The gaps.com writer guessed that "standard ChatGPT could handle the majority of use cases". The site's numbers in early 2025, 50,000 users and 75,000 queries, are 1.5 queries per user, and the writer read them as most people trying one query and not returning.
Dependence on model providers
The product started on OpenAI's Codex and GPT-3, and today the pricing page names only a "Basic" and an "Advanced" model. The newest features run inside Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor through MCP, so the companies that sell the language models also own the screens where these users work.
Company details are incomplete
The terms of service are a generic template that names no company. The contact page names Cross Regions Technology in Jacksonville, Florida. Where the founder lives and works is not verified.
