LocalRank sells tools for local SEO. SEO means search engine optimization; local SEO is the work of making a business appear higher when a person nearby searches Google or Google Maps for a service, for example a dentist or a plumber. The product has four main parts. A rank tracker measures the position of a business for a keyword from a grid of points on the map, because the result changes from street to street. A citation builder submits the name, address and phone number of the business to more than 550 directory sites in one click; such a listing is called a citation. A third part schedules posts and review replies on Google Business Profile, the free listing that Google shows for a business in Maps. The fourth part, added later, uses the GPT-4o model to write articles of the type "best plumber in Denver" and publishes them on a network of sites, so that AI assistants find and repeat the name of the business.

Jacky Chou, who has run the SEO agency Indexsy since 2014 and reports the income of more than ten businesses in public every month, started LocalRank with a developer whom the site names only as Peter. The site was an empty WordPress installation on 22 February 2025, and Chou announced a soft launch on X on 14 March 2025. Stripe payment records, read through TrustMRR on 13 October 2026, show US$729,565 of revenue since the start and US$431,459 in the last twelve months. The business is now much smaller than at its peak: verified revenue was US$55,941 in November 2025 and US$20,797 in September 2026, and the current MRR, monthly recurring revenue, the sum of all active subscriptions counted per month, is US$20,557 from 207 subscriptions. Chou's own monthly reports put the peak earlier, at US$68,038 in August 2025.

The headline total is grade A, because it comes from the payment processor and not from the founder. The founder's own monthly figures are grade C and are about 11% higher than the verified ones in the months where both exist. LocalRank is on this site as AI-leveraged, not AI-native: its core is ordinary SEO tooling, the AI features came after the launch, and the founder describes the product as "vibe coded", which means that an AI model wrote most of the code for the two people who built it. It has been listed for sale since 5 December 2025 at US$1,789,000. The page also shows what happened to earlier companies that sold marketing tools to small businesses or depended on Google's rules.

LocalRank: US$730K total since launch, October 2026. Local SEO software for agencies: rank tracker, directory listings and AI-written articles, Canada, team of 2 to 10, evidence grade A.

The four plans are subscriptions; the first column is the price per month when the customer pays for a year. Sign-up is free and the home page promises a refund if rankings do not rise in 90 days. The cheapest plan cost US$19 a month at the launch in March 2025, when the product was only a rank tracker, US$29 in June 2025, and US$57 from September 2025. The white label plans are a service: the agency sells local SEO under its own name and LocalRank does the work. The Academy is a paid community on Skool with 156 members on the day of reading; the sources do not say whether its payments are inside the Stripe figures on this page.

03

Why it worked

Four causes, in the order they mattered. Each one is a reusable lesson.

01

An audience first, a product second

Chou had published a video about SEO every day since 2023 and posted his income every month. He wrote that LocalRank grew to more than US$65,000 a month in three months because he had talked about SEO for 600 days. The buyers of a local rank tracker are SEO agencies, and they were already watching him.

02

One plain tool, then a bundle at a higher price

The first version was a rank tracker at US$19 a month. Citations, a leads database, review requests and AI articles followed within months, and the plans became one bundle from US$57 to US$2,997 a month. Each new part was a public post, and each post was a reason for agencies to look again.

03

Paid ads only after the organic channel worked

For the first four months the sources name only YouTube and X as channels. In July 2025 the first payment of a customer from an ad began to cover the cost of that ad, which is what first-order profitable means, and revenue by his figures rose from US$36,462 in June to US$66,703 in July.

04

Two people and AI coding tools

A marketer and a developer built and sold the product. Chou describes it as vibe coded, which means that the developer describes what he wants and an AI model writes most of the code. The same pair launched other software products in the same months.

How it was built

These details come from the company's pages and from the founder's posts on X. They are grade C. The sources do not name the programming language, the hosting or the data providers. [6, 3, 30, 15, 13, 14, 22, 1, 5]

  • The marketing site is WordPress: the first archived copy, of 22 February 2025, is a default WordPress installation. The application runs separately at app.localrank.so.
  • The developer co-founder, Peter, wrote in 2024 that he had worked as an engineer at Amazon and that he codes with AI editors such as Cursor.
  • Chou wrote of "a 5 month old vibe coded b2b saas" in August 2025, above an image of LocalRank in first place on Google, and asked that a new developer "must use claude or cursor". He wrote that the pair used more than US$2,000 of Claude Code credits a day while building two further products.
  • The AI inside the product: the LLM Citations page says that GPT-4o writes articles of more than 1,000 words, which are published on a network of more than 550 sites and indexed in 2 to 4 hours. The plans also list an "AI Autopilot" for Google Business Profile; the page describes scheduled posts and review replies and does not name the model.
  • The rank tracker and the leads database are sold by credits: 10,000 to 300,000 tracker credits a month, and lead credits that are charged only for email addresses.
  • Payments go through Stripe. TrustMRR reads the Stripe account with an API key, and the company also publishes its own open metrics page.

The dead that came before

Five records in the Loot Drop database sold marketing tools to small businesses, or lived on the rules of a platform that they did not control. The values below are from that database and are not independently verified.

Died 2014 to 2022Burned US$14M

Metigy

The promise

An AI marketing adviser for small businesses that cannot pay for a marketing team.

Why it died

Its advice was generic. Small businesses wanted the work done for them, not a dashboard of suggestions, and they left soon after signing up.

No Market NeedLoot Drop entry ↗
Died 2011 to 2019Burned US$15M

SumAll

The promise

One dashboard for all the marketing and sales data of a small business.

Why it died

Free tools from larger companies, such as Google Data Studio, did the same job. Small businesses did not see enough value for the price and cancelled.

Died 2013 to 2016Burned US$500K

LocalOn

The promise

Websites, social media links and local SEO for small local shops, with no coding.

Why it died

Shopify and Wix offered more. LocalOn had too little money to add features fast enough.

Died 2009 to 2013Burned US$2.5M

Argyle Social

The promise

A social media marketing tool that connects to marketing automation software.

Why it died

Larger competitors spent more on marketing, and the product depended on the APIs of the social platforms.

Died 2013 to 2017Burned none recorded

Waterproof Digital Camera

The promise

An affiliate blog that reached the top of Google with aggressive SEO methods.

Why it died

Google's algorithm updates removed its rankings, and the traffic and the commissions went with them.

Product/Tech FailureLoot Drop entry ↗

What changed

The five predecessors show two ways to fail. Metigy, SumAll, LocalOn and Argyle Social sold software to small businesses that did not see enough value and cancelled, while larger companies offered the same functions free or in a bigger package. The affiliate blog shows the second way: income that exists only as long as Google's ranking rules allow it. Chou knows the second way from his own history: he writes that a Google update removed his content sites.

LocalRank differs in three points. It sells to agencies, which resell the result to many local businesses and understand the tools, and not to the shop owner. It was built by two people with AI coding tools, so it needed no investor. And its first customers came from an audience that the founder already had. What did not change is the first risk: verified monthly revenue fell by 63% in ten months, and the count of subscriptions on the company's own page fell from 452 to 270.

05

Can one person copy it now?

The audience, no. The sequence, yes.

The start of LocalRank depended on years of daily videos and public income reports by one person, and that cannot be copied quickly. The order of the steps can be: a plain tool for a buyer who already listens to you, a low first price, more tools and higher prices as customers ask, and paid ads only when the first payment covers the ad. The fall after the peak is the part to study before copying. A launch to your own audience brings a wave of customers once, and the business afterwards is as large as the number of customers who stay.

Where it is still open: Tools for agencies that sell visibility in AI answers. A member of LocalRank's own community wrote that this offer is "a lot more interesting to people compared to local SEO". The demand is new, and the rules of Google and of the AI companies for such content are not settled.

  1. 1Teach one subject in public on a fixed schedule before you have a product, on the platform where buyers watch long content. For this product, YouTube brought four times the launch revenue of X.
  2. 2Launch one plain tool at a low monthly price to that audience, and announce every addition in public.
  3. 3Add the tools that customers request and move them into one bundle with higher prices.
  4. 4Start paid ads after the organic channel works, and continue only while the first payment of a new customer covers the ad.
  5. 5Connect a payment-verified page to your revenue, so that buyers and readers can check your figures.
  6. 6Measure from the first month how many customers cancel, because new sign-ups from an audience slow down after the launch.

What to watch

The risks are the mirror image of the causes above.

The trend is down

Verified revenue fell from US$55,941 in November 2025 to US$20,797 in September 2026, minus 62.8%, and TrustMRR reports MRR growth of minus 22.9% for the last 30 days. The headline total of US$729,565 is a sum since the launch; the present level is about US$21,000 a month. No source gives the reason for the fall. In March 2026 the founder wrote that updates had improved retention, which shows that cancellations were a known problem.

Google's rules on reviews and fake engagement

The plans include Review Booster, described on the home page as "Farm 5 star reviews on autopilot". Google's policy for Maps says that merchants may not "selectively solicit positive reviews from customers" or offer incentives for reviews, and that fake engagement is removed. Google reported that it blocked or removed more than 292 million policy-violating reviews and more than 13 million fake Business Profiles in 2025, and that it can pause new reviews on a profile. The sources do not say whether Review Booster asks only satisfied customers. The white label page also sells "CTR setup/management", which it describes as click-through rate optimization, and "PBN Citations"; PBN is the usual short form of private blog network. If Google restricts the profile of a customer, the customer loses the result that the tool sold.

Google's spam policies and the AI articles

LLM Citations publishes GPT-4o articles that place the customer first, on what the page calls its own network of more than 550 sites. Google's spam policies name as scaled content abuse the use of generative AI tools "to generate many pages without adding value for users", name automated link creation as link spam, and count "attempting to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search" as spam. The home page calls the method "Fully Google-safe". That is the seller's statement, and Google decides.

Google answers local questions with its own AI

On 12 March 2026 Google introduced Ask Maps, a conversation with Gemini inside Google Maps, first in the USA and India. Google says the answers use information from more than 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors, and that they are personalized for each user. A position on a map grid, which is what a rank tracker measures, describes such an answer less well. LocalRank's reply is its AI Recommendation Monitor, a new product in a new market.

Three sets of figures that do not agree

The founder's monthly figures are 7% to 26% above the Stripe-verified ones, and the company's own open page shows 270 subscriptions and MRR of US$36,209 on the day when TrustMRR shows 207 and US$20,557. The home page has said "500+ paying agencies" since June 2025, and no subscription count in any source reaches 500. Use the grade A rows.

For sale, and one product among many

LocalRank has been listed since 5 December 2025 at US$1,789,000, which is 7.4 times the present yearly rate of revenue while revenue falls. The founder runs an agency, a community and several other software products, wrote in June 2025 that he and his co-founder would launch a new B2B product every month, and now reports LocalRank inside a group of seven. The first customers came from his personal audience, so a buyer should ask which channel will sell the product after the sale.
